NoteThis article covers following important facts of “Atmosphere of Earth” for CTET, State TETs and other teaching recruitment exams.

The atmosphere of Earth is the layer of gases, commonly known as air, that surrounds the planet Earth and is retained by Earth’s gravity.

How many atmospheres does the earth have?
Earth’s atmosphere is divided into five main layers: the exosphere, the thermosphere, the mesosphere, the stratosphere and the troposphere.

LayerAltitude Range (Km)Temperature Range (Degree C)
Troposphere 0 – 1215 to -56
Stratosphere 12 – 50-56 to -2
Mesosphere 50 – 80-2 to -92
Thermosphere 80 – 700-92 to 1200
Exosphere 700 above

The lower part of the thermosphere, from 80 to 550 Km above Earth’s surface, contains the ionosphere. The ionosphere is ionized by solar radiation.

Thermosphere layer helps in radio transmission. In fact, radio waves transmitted from the earth are reflected back to the earth by this layer.

What is Earth’s atmosphere made of?
Earth’s atmosphere is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon, and 0.03% carbon dioxide with very small percentages of other elements. Our atmosphere also contains water vapor. In addition, Earth’s atmosphere contains traces of dust particles, pollen, plant grains and other solid particles.

Which layer contains the ozone layer?
The ozone layer is mainly found in the lower portion of the stratosphere, from approximately 15 to 35 kilometers (9.3 to 21.7 mi) above Earth, although its thickness varies seasonally and geographically. Ozone plays a crucial role in blocking the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

At what layer do most airplanes fly at the top of?
Commercial jet aircraft fly in the lower stratosphere to avoid the turbulence which is common in the troposphere below. The stratosphere is very dry; air there contains little water vapor. Because of this, few clouds are found in this layer; almost all clouds occur in the lower, more humid troposphere.

Which gas causes global warming?
A greenhouse gas (sometimes abbreviated GHG) is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range. Greenhouse gases cause the greenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone.

In which layer of the atmosphere are the incoming meteors mainly disintegrated?
A lot of meteors burn up in mesosphere layer while entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

What is found in the troposphere?
The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere. Most of the mass (about 75-80%) of the atmosphere is in the troposphere. Most types of clouds are found in the troposphere, and almost all weather occurs within this layer. Air is warmest at the bottom of the troposphere near ground level.
